The town Dornbirn, known by its inhabitants as 'Dorrabirra‘, is located in the East Austrian Alps, near the border to Germany, Switzerland and the principality of Liechtenstein.
The river Dornbirner Ach flows through the city and later into the Lake of Constance (Bodensee). With approximately 46,000 inhabitants, it is the biggest city in the region of Vorarlberg and the economic center, but still was able to preserve its charm and an impressive mixture of rural- & urban architecture. One of the most enjoyable places in Vorarlberg is the Dornbirn Market square. In the welcoming and bustling pedestrian precinct in the middle of the town there are lots of stores and shops that invite to stroll around. Usually, they are opened Monday to Friday from 9:00 til 18:00 and on Saturdays from 9:00 til 12:00. Large Supermarkets open on weekdays from 8.30 til 19:30 and on Saturdays from 8:30 til 17:00. On Sundays all the shops are closed except the bakeries in the main railway stations and some petrol station self-service shops. Thanks to the moderate size of Dornbirn, practically everything can be reached on foot or by bike. In addition you have excellent bus connections (red buses) to all parts of the town. You can explore surrounding towns and places by taking the regional buses (yellow buses).
