Profile of the programme
Three focuses for the degree programme and courses for various media specialisations provide students with the freedom to pursue an in-depth study of their interests and to polish their skills in an individual way.
- Corporate Communication
Design visual communication for organisations (profit and non-profit)
- Computer Graphics & Virtual Reality
Design in synthetic, multi-dimensional environments
- Arts & Science
Design in open environments; experimental projects with an affinity for theory and the intent to develop a product
The focus selected at the beginning of the master's degree programme will accompany you through the entire degree programme. The projects, seminars and workshops in your focus are arranged in an intermedia and cross-media way. The students select a media portfolio to find an ideal solution for the tasks at hand.
A master's thesis on a high conceptual and scientific level completes the degree programme.
Focal points in the individual semesters
The degree programme is set up for 16 semester hours per week.
The central aspect of the 1st and 3rd semesters consists of the focus projects.
In small teams, you will implement practice-related subjects in a conceptual and creative way. Lecturers support project work in impetus lectures and with individual advice. The students in the 1st and 3rd semesters attend courses in the focuses with students from all academic classes. The courses in image science and design research provide additional knowledge about theoretical questions in design and media.
In the 2nd and 4th semester, the students gain additional professional expertise in workshops for their selected focus. Specialists in research and the economy teach about current subjects outside of the focuses.
So that you can specialise and refine your creative skills in individual media, you have the option of selecting specific media workshops in the following subject areas in the 2nd semester.
- Print: from the layout to the printing
- Photography and Scenography: reporting and staging
- Moving Picture, Video and Animation: studio and reporting work
- Interactive Media: conception and realisation of complex systems
- Computer Graphics: 3-dimensional objects in silent mode, animation and interaction
The 4th semester focuses on the master’s thesis. Usually, the master's thesis includes both the handling of a research question and the preparation of practical work. The degree programme concludes with an oral master's examination.
A quarter of the degree programme is covered by the offers at the master's library, which can be arranged according to your own very personal focal points and preferences (more information about the module library).
