Specific admission requirements
Formal admission requirements
- A bachelor’s degree or diploma degree in social work awarded by a University of Applied Sciences.
- A diploma from a three-year programme at an Academy of Social Work.
- Graduates of two-year programmes at Academies of Social Work must demonstrate that they have completed 60 ECTS of continuing education courses (relevant continuing education courses at accredited post-secondary educational institutions).
- University graduates with a relevant social science degree (lasting at least six semesters): for both areas of specialization, applicants must demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of psychology, pedagogy and sociology. If you are unable to present proof or only limited proof of this please refer, for example, to the course offerings at the State Training Centre in Lochau http://www.fhv.at/campus-schloss-hofen-1 (Landesbildungszentrum Schloss Hofen in Lochau), which offers continuing education courses in these fields. When submitting your application, please note that we require a detailed description of your continuing education courses, including information about semester week hours (SWS) and ECTS.
In the case of professional work experience, preference is given to experience in the field of social work. Please contact us, if you require further information. We will be happy to answer your questions. - An equivalent foreign degree or qualification. Equivalency is determined by international treaties, nostrification or, in individual cases, by the Head of the Degree Programme.
Comparable degree courses: in individual cases, the Degree Programme Head decides about equivilancy and assess an applicant’s knowledge of fundamental social work topics.
Applicants from non-German speaking countries must provide proof of German at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). They must also have a command of English that will allow them to work with bibliographical references (B2 level).
If the number of applicants exceeds the 24 available places all successful applicants will be invited to go through a selection process.
Broad admission to the master's degree programme
Mandatory modules or credits to ensure equivalent levels are planned in the 1st semester on account of the diversity among the students admitted to the master's degree programme in Social Work.
The contents of the modules are: theory of the profession, models on the subject and theories of action, positions in social (work) science, quantitative methods and qualitative methods.
Personal requirements
The master's degree programme is conceived for the scientific development and specialisation of your knowledge in the field. Tremendous discipline and systematic time management are required in the part-time degree programme. The training is oriented on new developments and current standards in the contents, requires the ability to reflect, structures academic work and research, offers leeway for innovation in independent work and promotes professional and personal discourse.
