Semester abroad and internship
Semester abroad
Students have the possibility of studying as exchange students for a semester at one of over 100 partner universities of the FHV. The 6th semester is available for this.
The study plan at the FHV includes only electives in this semester, which facilitates a high degree of flexibility in the selection of courses at the partner university. The study credits abroad are easily and completely credited through the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
The international network at the FHV has been continuously expanded in recent years so that a broad range of student exchange places are ensured around the world.
The bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science - Software and Information Engineering has partner universities in Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Korea, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Turkey and the US.
The option is popular among students in the bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science - Software and Information Engineering. More than 50 % use the opportunity to gain experience abroad.
Incoming students from the Computer Science degree programmes of our partner universities and free movers have the option of elective courses for 52 ECTS in the summer semester without overlapping in the course schedule and completely in English.

- Mathias Gsteu - Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Netherlands:
I would choose Amsterdam again at any time and can really not recommend it enough for anyone who wants to get to know an interesting city, even more interesting people and the relaxed Dutch lifestyle. The HvA is also OK. Afterwards, you will definitely appreciate Austrian thoroughness and the really good organisation at the FHV.
- Christoph Storm - University of Technology Sydney, Australia:
I can only recommend Sydney, the UTS and Australia in general!
The experiences that I have had here so far are simply great. I would come back here immediately and not do anything else - Everything is perfect.
- Sarah Hofer - Sung Kyun Kwan University, Seoul, South Korea:
South Korea is to be recommended if you are interested in Asian culture, and can quickly get used to other cultures because everything is simply completely different than here. For me, however, it was exactly the right decision.
You will receive more detailed information about the subject of the semester abroad from the International Office.
Internship
The degree programme at the university is characterised by its high practical relevance. Practical relevance means not only providing knowledge and experiences in professional practice, but also outlining and experiencing economic, legal and social business events.
A 12-week internship is supposed to take place during the period between the 4th and 5th semester. In the internship, students get to know the actual work of computer scientists and software engineers. Project-related use of the student during the entire internship is planned for its execution. The goal is to gain deeper insight into the corresponding areas of activity and address a complex problem in the form of a project.
To facilitate the continuous processing of the executed activities and their success, two personal advisers are provided for each intern. These two, an employee at the company on site and a university lecturer, remain in contact with the student during the entire internship and discuss the actual process during the internship.
The work and activities performed as part of the internship and the resulting experiences are summarised upon completion of the internship in a theoretical report (bachelor's thesis 1) and discussed with the adviser.
The internship is an integral part of the curriculum and accounts for 12 ECTS, including the final report (bachelor's thesis 1).
Fundamentally, the completion of the internship is also possible abroad. To date, we have had very positive experiences with the internships abroad in the Computer Science degree programmes.
It is precisely the companies that value the possibility of the internship, and it offers a good opportunity to make contact with our graduates early on and test their skills.
- Bachmann Electronic GmbH, Feldkirch
Matthias met/handled the formulated goals/tasks in a very structured way and with the highest quality. Furthermore, we noticed that he is a dedicated team player who critically questions his tasks.
- Zumtobel AG, Dornbirn
Structured testing: test planning, coordination, conducting tests and documentation. Outstanding performance!
SQL analysis - Independent processing - Very quality-conscious.
- Leica Geosystems, Heerbrugg, CH
The goals were entirely achieved. Christoph did great work. He integrated himself into the team well. It was a joy to work with him.
- IBM Zurich Research Lab, CH
Florian mastered the diverse programming, networking + testing challenges with bravura, thanks to his excellent background from the university of Dornbirn. We thank him for his valuable contribution to our project.
The Head of the Degree Programme is glad to accept company offers for internships!
