Key learning outcomes

The following competencies are trained as part of the degree programme:

  • Software development: Our graduates are capable of working on complex software systems from the problem or client request to the draft, implementation and installation of the solution, irrespective of whether it involves new, independent software systems or new parts that should be integrated in existing systems. They command the methods of software project management and can successfully implement it alone or in a team.

  • Hardware systems and networking: Computer scientists master current hardware and network technologies. From an initially prepared request profile, they can create, achieve and also service concepts for complex hardware and network systems. In the process, they also consider in particular critical areas such as security, availability and also efficiency.

  • Combination of hardware, software and networks: Computer scientists can use the connection between software development and networking to develop new services and applications; in particular, the area of web 2.0 offers a broad field of new possibilities.

  • Understanding economic relationships: Beyond the horizons of their own field, software and information engineers must also identify and understand economic relationships in particular. On the one hand, they are capable of handling typical problems in information systems, that is e.g. modelling economic processes in ERP software systems. On the other hand, they understand the language of the economic decision makers in a business and assume the role of a "translator" for issues related to information technology.

  • Communication competency: The professional profile makes high demands of the communicative competencies of the software engineers and information engineers in the following areas:
  • in a team: Complex software systems are usually developed in a team, also increasingly in globally distributed teams, and communication is a key factor for success.
  • with the client: The computer scientists must listen to what the client says, understand what he or she usually means, know what he or she actually needs and also be able to explain this to the client.
  • with the user: Communication with the user takes place primarily via the user interfaces that are designed by the software developer and made as user friendly as possible. Handbooks must be written in the language of the users; training sessions must likewise be held in the language of the users.
  • with the economic decision makers: The software and information engineer must be able to express his wishes and requirements to the economic decision makers in the company and act as a "translator" of the technical computer science jargon in the company.
  • with other scientists: Computer scientists must be capable of following the scientific discourse in their field.
  • Language competency: English is definitely the specialist language in computer science. Computer scientists must also be able to conduct all of the aforementioned communication and moderation processes in English.

  • With the bachelor's degree, graduates can complete a postgraduate master'sdegree programme not only at the FH Vorarlberg, but also at national and international universities and FHs.
