Requirements and Prerequisites

You should either have a level of A2 or B1 in German or have previously had German instruction over a longer period of time. As an intermediate to advanced learner of German you should be able to easily understand all instructions given by your teacher in German.

Course content

The course focuses less on explicit grammar teaching but rather on increasing students’ vocabulary and fluency by covering topics related to Austrian and German culture. It also aims at teaching how to argue a case, write short reports and reflect upon more complex issues. A passive vocabulary of approximately 1500 words is normally required for this level.  

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course you should be able to understand expressions related to a variety of topics, such as travel, holidays, or country-specific cultural phenomena. You are able to deal with complex texts, answering questions and identifying key terminology. You will be able to interact successfully with German speakers in most situations, also when not an expert in the subject matter. This normally corresponds to a level of B1+.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Task based learning strategies applied in group and team work, writing activities, listening activities and video analyses.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is normally a combination of written assignments submitted and tests taken during the semester.


Active participation is essential for this course.
