We work on engineering microstructured materials for energy applications. We are particularly interested in tomography based numerical simulation.
Microstructured functional materials and porous media are important for energy applications due to extraordinary combinations of macroscopic properties that stem from intricate micro-geometries. Designing and enhancing microstructured materials critically depends on understanding the link between micro-geometry and macroscopic properties. Reticulate porous ceramics are a good example of microstructured functional materials. We use computer tomography to obtain precise, 3D digital representations of the microgeometry. Then, we use direct micro-scale numerical simulation of heat and mass transfer phenomena to understand and optimize macroscopic behavior.
