Learning outcomes

This module discusses the contemporary issues in Strategic Management. The module identifies new approaches, and uses academic and practitioner literature to understand these contemporary issues, to develop strategic plans with value as a guiding principle.  The module deals with competitive advantage in terms of market-based and state-based perspectives, and applies the use of in-depth case studies to understand the challenges SMEs and large organisations face in terms of globalisation, emerging economies, digitalisation, ethics and sustainability and measuring performance.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The module incorporates a wide range of approaches to teaching, learning and assessment  and will be taught through interactive/participative lectures and seminars.  Typically, a session will contain a mixture of activities: generally based around interactive lecturing, dealing with a number of specific issues/topics. These may then be examined in greater detail by students, who might be asked to work in small groups on a case study, or an article.  Groups present their solutions to the entire group, and this would be openly discussed. The tutor introduces and explains key concepts and learning points, which are consolidated by class discussion and case study analysis to achieve understanding and to prepare for assessment.  In addition to these class – based secondary resources, an outline syllabus content and associated reading list is provided at the start of the module, and is referred to in class sessions to promote guided personal study.

Assessment methods and criteria

Using a case study you will be required to analyse the contemporary issues affecting the case and recommend  strategies to deal with these issues. The assessments will be base in two parts: 

Group Presentation: 50%

In groups students will be required to analyse a selected case and make their strategic recommendations 

Group  Assignment 50% (2500 words) 

Using the same case study and based upon the feedback received for the  presentations students then write  a report applying theory to practice and highlighting their individual contributing to the assessment.
