Course content

In the course “Philosophicum – Thinking&Dialogue” students will not simply memorize pure knowledge of the history of philosophy. It is much more important to develop, for example with the help of a phenomenological or hermeneutic method, their own way of thinking, of philosophizing and of communicating. In order to reach this goal, theoretical inputs of the lecturers will be combined with individual and collective reading of primary and secondary literature as well as with practical exercises. As mentioned before, the topics of communication and philosophical dialogue will also be relevant, especially in contrast to pure rhetoric and sophistic talking and thinking. The course explicitly wants to demonstrate that communicative competences and philosophical perceptions are highly beneficial in everyday life and in the work life when it comes to cooperating, solving problems and managing personnel.

The course “Philosophicum – Presence Of Mind” attempts at letting students see the figures and characteristics of philosophical thinking in front of the background of the history of philosophy. By means of a specific figure of philosophy (which can either be a person, a system, or a form of thinking) an active reference to historical as well as current problems will be given. The following example will help to explain this abstract notion: The question of the transformation of renaissance-humanism through modernity – which, according to Bruno Latour, never really existed – will be confronted with the current questions of the so-called post-humanism, the term of “modernity” used by Michel Foucault or the so-called “Humanismusbrief” written by Martin Heidegger. The relationship between the self (an important topic of, for example, the Stoa), the relationship to the others/the other (the so-called “Mitsein”, the political) and the relationship to the physical world (nature, technology, economy) will be reflected as dynamic agens. Philosophical figures of thinking as well as philosophical terms will be questioned concerning their functions to provide answers to problems/questions of their times. Simultaneously we will develop current terms in order to understand the present a little bit better as well as to be able to expand our ways of acting.


Learning outcomes

Students will be empowered to develop their own way of thinking. They will, therefore, be able to start thinking “outside the box”. Various terms and forms of philosophical thinking as well as positions from the history of philosophy are known by the students and they will be encouraged to deepen their knowledge of some specific philosophical concepts. The importance of thinking and “living” in dialogue will be carved out and also shown in the course of practical exercises. Students will additionally be able to approach philosophical papers and discourses, analyze them and then apply their new knowledge to current problems. All in all students will come one step closer in their own and specific “Geistesgegenwärtigkeit” (“Presence of Mind”).


Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lecture, reading & analysis of texts, group dialogue, independent reading of texts and books, discourse analysis as well as practical exercises.

 


Assessment methods and criteria

Short term paper, participation (for example with the help of a presentation), and oral exam.

Criteria: participation, thinking, introducing topics and perspectives into the course, independent preparation of the literature.


Comment

The course will change concerning its specific topics over time. However, the basic foundation – as described above – will be preserved.

 


Recommended or required reading

The necessary literature will be announced at the beginning of the course. The lecturers focus on current and specific literature related to the topics of the course. However, it will also be helpful to prepare for the lecture with the help of an introduction into the history of philosophy or any other book that deals with philosophical topics in the 21st century.

 


Mode of delivery (face-to-face, distance learning)

The course will start out in a lecture with seminar-like exercises and then develop into an intensive study week in the second half of the semester. The first part carries the name “Philosophicum – Geistesgegenwart” (“Philosophicum – Presence Of Mind”) and will be taught by Hubert Matt as a lecture with seminar-like exercises. The second part “Philosophicum – Denken&Dialog” (“Philosophicum – Thinking&Dialogue”) will be taught by Peter and Jonathan Jancsary in the form of a compact/block seminar.
