Course content

The course provides insight into selected current research topics in the field of intelligent buildings. Typical topics can be:

  • Demand Side Management and Demand Response in buildings.
  • Potential of permanent measures to increase plant efficiency.
  • Increased added value of storage and generation through neighbourhood considerations such as local energy communities.
  • Comprehensive considerations of mobility, heat and electricity for sector coupling in buildings and neighbourhoods.
  • Home automation systems as a means of intelligent plant operation.
  • Market-based approaches as means for optimized plant operation.

Learning outcomes

After the course, the students will be familiar with individual current technical developments in the field of intelligent buildings. As a result of the course, they have obtained a detailed assessment of their advantages and disadvantages. The students

  • can present the specific technological developments presented and describe how they work
  • recognise the need for the development of new technical solutions at the level of buildings and residential areas for the successes of the energy revolution
  • can evaluate the technologies considered in the course and the concept of sector coupling in terms of their advantages and disadvantages
  • can critically reflect individual approaches and technologies with regard to their effects on the building, the neighbourhood and higher-level systems (such as energy networks)
