Double Degree Master of  Mechatronics at UiA and FH Vorarlberg

The University of Agder (UiA), Norway and FH Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, Austria established a Double Degree Programme in Mechatronics in 2013.

This Double Degree Programme is based on mutual recognition of the Mechatronics Master's degree programme at UiA and the Mechatronics Master's degree programme at FH Vorarlberg.

Bernhard Fässler

We proudly present: Our first PhD graduate from the University of Agder

Bernhard Fässler is the first PhD student who completed his doctorate in cooperation with the University of Agder in Norway. Before he started his doctoral studies he was also the first to complete his master's degree in Mechatronics as a Double Degree student of University of Agder in Norway and Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences in Austria.

Important information

The Double Degree Programme (DDP) is:

  • A 2-year MSc Programme (120 ECTS) in Mechatronics for MSc students at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences (FH Vorarlberg) and the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science (UiA).
  • Based on the MSc programmes in Mechatronics at FH Vorarlberg and UiA.

Students enrolled in the DDP will:

  • Study at their home university for the first 2 semesters (first year of study) of the MSc programme (60 ECTS).
  • Study in the 3rd semester at the host university (30 ECTS).
  • The 4th semester, the thesis project semester (30 ECTS), is a joint project semester supervised and examined by both universities. DDP students can undertake the thesis project semester at either the home or host university. The main supervisor will be nominated at the home university, and the students perform the thesis project with a co-supervisor from the host university.

The awarding of the Master of Science Degree:

  • Students who successfully complete the Double Degree Programme and pass 120 ECTS credits will be awarded the Master of Science Degree from UiA and FH Vorarlberg.
  • The structure and content of the Double Degree will be described in the Diploma Supplement.

General information

  • If you are interested in attending the Double Degree programme please contact the International Office at FH Vorarlberg. The person in charge at FH Vorarlberg will provide you with individual information and will nominate you for the Double Degree programme.
  • Please consider that you need to apply as an exchange student for the Double Degree programme by the 15th of April at the latest. Detailed information regarding being an exchange student at UiA is available here.
  • You have the option of studying for one or two semesters at UiA. It will be possible to extend your stay after you have started your exchange semester at UiA.
  • If you decide to study for two semesters you need to consider that the Master's Thesis presentation/examination will take place at UiA.

Deadlines for students studying at UiA for two semesters

  • Students of FH Vorarlberg need to decide by the 30th of October the latest at which university they are going to write the Master's Thesis / if they are going to stay for a second semester at UiA.
  • The International Education Office at campus Grimstad will support you with organising the extension of your stay.
  • Students of FH Vorarlberg need to discuss and define together with the academic person in charge (FH Vorarlberg: Johannes Steinschaden, UiA: Michael Hansen) all relevant issues for the Master's Thesis (topic, thesis supervisors, proposed dates for handing in the Master's Thesis and for the master's presentation / examination) by mid-November at the latest.
  • The official duration for the second semester is beginning of January until the 31st of May (= 5 months). These dates will also stated in the Erasmus grant. If students need to have more time to work on the Master's Thesis and if they are staying for a longer time at UiA, they can apply for an extension of the Erasmus grant at FH Vorarlberg. Application for an Erasmus grant extension needs to be done by the end of April at the latest.
  • The Master's Thesis presentation takes place at UiA in June.
  • Exceptions to the aforementioned deadlines need to be discussed well in advance with the persons in charge.

  • If you would like to get more detailed information about the Double Degree Programme with FH Vorarlberg, please contact Morten Kjeld Ebbesen for more information about the programme. If you want to apply for the programme, the International Education Office at campus Grimstad  will help you with the application process and all other formalities.
  • Please consider that you need to register for the Double Degree programme by the 15th of February. The application to FH Vorarlberg must be sent by the 15th of May. Detailed information regarding being an exchange student at FH Vorarlberg can be found here.

  • In accordance with Austrian law, Double Degree students also need to pay the fee for the Austrian Student Union (ÖH). The fee is 20,20 euros per semester and needs to be paid for two semesters (even if you only study for one semester at FH Vorarlberg).
  • If you decide to study for two semesters you need to consider that the Master's Thesis presentation / examination will take place at FH Vorarlberg.
