AI is increasingly taking over tasks that were previously handled by software developers. This doesn’t mean the profession is disappearing, but the requirements are changing. “AI won’t replace Computer Science professionals, but it will fundamentally change their work. In the future, it will be less about writing every line of code yourself. What matters most is understanding complex systems, using AI tools effectively, and critically evaluating their results,” explains Peter Reiter, programme director for Computer Science—Software and Information Engineering. In this full-time bachelor’s degree programme, students learn to develop modern software solutions using AI, test-driven development, and agile methodologies. In addition to programming, they study databases, computer systems, and information security, as well as machine learning and AI. A distinctive feature is project-based learning: as early as the first four semesters, students work on six projects in increasingly larger teams. Professional practical training and connections to research and Business and Management round out the programme.
Shaping Innovation
The part-time Bachelor’s programme in Computer Science – Digital Innovation offers a different approach. It combines computer science and software development with Business Administration and innovation management. The focus is on how digital technologies can be used to develop new products and services, improve business processes, or tap into new markets. “AI can support us in many technological tasks. However, it does not automatically determine which problem a company should solve or which innovation truly offers customers added value. This requires people who can connect technology, Business and Management contexts, and needs to develop new solutions,” emphasizes programme director Andreas Pichler.
People Make the Decisions
With AI, skills that go beyond pure technical expertise are becoming increasingly important. That is why the so-called “Future Skills”—including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and the responsible use of new technologies—are embedded in all curricula at the FHV. “Technical expertise remains the foundation. In the age of AI, however, graduates also need the ability to critically assess technological developments, take on responsibility, and work with others to develop sustainable solutions. It is precisely this combination that will be crucial in the future,” emphasizes FHV Rector Regine Kadgien.
With its master’s programmes in Computer Science and Business Informatics—Digital Transformation, the FHV also offers advanced study opportunities: ranging from specialized study in Computer Science to designing digital transformation in companies at the intersection of Engineering and Technology and Business and Management. Applications for the fall semester are still being accepted through August 31 for select degree programmes in Engineering and Technology, Business and Management, Design, and Work and Health.
