Making a fresh start after completing an apprenticeship requires courage and perseverance. This is exactly what characterizes Vanessa Dietl. After graduating from high school and completing an apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory technician, the Wolfurt native decided to study computer science at the FHV. Her goal: "I wanted to get out of the lab and do something I was really passionate about. I found that by studying at the FHV." Today, she is already in the fourth semester of her Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a specialization in Computer Science - Software and Information Engineering. She is convinced that she made the right decision: "The FHV is modern, the facilities are top-notch and the relationship between students and lecturers is really pleasant - personal and on an equal footing."
Hackathon and game jams
What she particularly appreciates about her studies is the strong practical orientation. "We work on real projects and don't just learn theory. I found the team projects and our hackathon particularly exciting - that was a real highlight for me." She gained practical experience in coding by taking part in game jams. Small games are developed within a few days. "I was able to apply my knowledge straight away - and got even more interested in software development at the same time."
Open day
Despite the demanding daily study routine, Vanessa has never regretted her decision: "Even though it's exhausting at times, the positives outweigh the negatives. I meet so many interesting people and it just feels great when you successfully complete a semester." Her tip for anyone who is still unsure whether and what they should study? "Take advantage of the information evenings, make use of advice sessions, talk to students from different fields of study, get a taste of professions and give yourself time to make the right decision. And don't be afraid to change your course if you realize it's not right after all."
Vanessa has clear ideas for her own future: "I want to successfully complete my studies, maybe add a Master's degree - and then find a job that fulfills me and at the same time gives me the freedom to enjoy my life."
