Transfer center for applied photonics: Innovation with light technology

24.10.2025
With the new transfer center for applied photonics, a central contact point for research and development of photonic systems is being created in Vorarlberg. The center is a cooperation between the FHV's microtechnology research centre and the V-Research research center.

Photonics - the use of light for technological applications - is considered a key technology in many future fields. The transfer center focuses on practical developments in the fields of quantum technology, life science, environmental sensors and telecommunications.

A central element is the modular photonics kit that has been developed: it enables companies - especially small and medium-sized enterprises - to access tailor-made photonic solutions without having to build up expensive development resources themselves. This closes the gap between high-tech research and industrial application.

The center sees itself as an innovation driver for the region and as a reliable partner for companies that want to integrate photonics into their products or processes in a targeted manner.

Fadi Dohnal, Head of the Microtechnology Research Center at FHV and Project Manager of the Transfer Center for Applied Photonics, adds: "The Transfer Center for Applied Photonics bundles the regional and decades-long expertise of the partners FHV and V-Research (Campus V) as a central point of contact in Vorarlberg. The aim is to transfer practical research results in environmental sensor technology, life sciences, quantum technologies and telecommunications more quickly into practice, to strengthen the innovative power of local Business and Management and to position Vorarlberg as a powerful partner in European photonics research."
