Between lecture hall and ice rink

03.04.2026
Andreas Weber is studying for a Bachelor's degree in International Business Administration at the FHV. The 25-year-old appreciates the high level of practical relevance and the personal atmosphere on the full-time course.

Ice hockey referee, assistant auditor at SPT in Dornbirn and student: Andreas Weber combines his job, studies and his passion for sport. The Rankweiler appreciates studying at the FHV in Vorarlberg and staying at home. "As I regularly manage games in eastern Switzerland, I deliberately wanted to study here in the region," explains the Oberlander. He particularly appreciates the personal atmosphere at the FHV. "The course is very practice-oriented and the supervisor is much more personal than at large universities," Andreas emphasizes. His highlights so far include excursions to Vorarlberg companies such as Doppelmayr and Hirschmann. "It's exciting to get to know successful companies from the region and to see how Business and Management works in practice." Alongside his studies, he works 40% of the time as an auditing assistant at SPT in Dornbirn. His tasks include, for example, assisting with auditing balance sheets or monitoring inventories.

Discipline from competitive sport

His past as a competitive ice hockey player also helps Andreas in his day-to-day studies. "Discipline and perseverance are just as important in my studies as they are in sport." These qualities help him to juggle everything. During the season, he is on duty around two to three times a week. His territory ranges from Vorarlberg to Lucerne. "Most of the games take place in the evening or at the weekend, so it's easy to combine with my studies."

Sharing experiences

Andreas is also actively involved away from the lecture hall. As a Student Ambassador, he represents the FHV at events and is available to answer questions from prospective students. "I'm a very communicative person and like to share my experiences with others," says Andreas, giving an insight into his motivation. In the following semesters, he would like to take the opportunity to gain international experience. Next year, he will spend a semester abroad in Japan at Kanagawa University in Yokohama. As a member of the European University RUN-EU (Regional University Network - European University), the FHV also offers the opportunity to spend a week abroad at one of its partner universities to strengthen intercultural skills. Andreas' plans after his Bachelor's degree are still open. One thing is important to him above all: "You can achieve anything as long as you enjoy what you do and are prepared to show commitment."
