Treffpunkt Hochschule Vorarlberg: Don't you learn to read in school!? The problem of reading and ways out of the reading crisis
What can you expect?
Reading is generally regarded as something one learns at school – and then simply knows how to do. Yet, at regular intervals, reading comes to the forefront of public attention as a ‘problem’ in society and in schools, particularly when the results of national or international comparative studies make it clear that this widespread assumption is far from applying to all learners. Moreover, reading difficulties do not only affect children and young people. Adults, too, are often restricted in their participation in society due to a lack of reading skills.
This talk takes these findings as its starting point and explores which forms of reading support can actually help to build reading competence in the long term. Drawing on the scientific evaluation of the ‘Lesende Schulen Vorarlberg’ project, it demonstrates which reading support measures are effective. The talk will highlight tried-and-tested methods for promoting reading fluency. You will also learn why stress, prosody and the inner voice are particularly important for reading comprehension.

Treffpunkt Hochschule Vorarlberg is a joint initiative of the three universities in Vorarlberg - the FHV, the Vorarlberg University of Teacher Education (PHV) and the Stella Vorarlberg Private University of Music.
