What can you expect?

Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as one of the finest, if not the finest, electric guitarist who ever lived. Contemporaries and rivals such as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend were equally captivated by his virtuosity and inventiveness. However, the aesthetic aspect of Jimi Hendrix’s music has been given too little attention. Using two live recordings – ‘Wild Thing’ from the 1967 concert in Monterrey and ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’, the American national anthem, from a 1969 concert at the Los Angeles Forum – this paper demonstrates that Jimi Hendrix’s music placed him at the forefront of the development of postmodern aesthetics.
