Doctoral Degree Authorization for Universities of Applied Sciences

The extent of this disadvantage is illustrated by the example of Philipp Wohlgenannt. His doctoral research was carried out at the Josef Ressel Centre for Intelligent Thermal Energy Systems at FHV and helps companies better align their energy demand with electricity generated from renewable sources. The research was funded by Austrian partners and funding bodies. Nevertheless, he was required to complete his PhD at the University of Agder in Norway.

This case exemplifies a structural problem: although the research, funding and economic benefits are all based in Austria, universities of applied sciences are not permitted to offer their own doctoral programmes. As a result, the academic recognition for this work is awarded to foreign universities. For doctoral candidates, this also means additional administrative and organisational effort.

FHV therefore supports the position of the Austrian Conference of Universities of Applied Sciences (FHK) and calls on the Federal Government to create the legal framework for accredited doctoral programmes in applied research without delay.

Not a Copy of the Universities

“We are not calling for a replica of the universities, but for an important addition to Austria’s research landscape. Research-intensive universities of applied sciences should be given the opportunity to offer accredited doctoral programmes in applied research,” emphasises Markus Preißinger, Head of Research.

“Accredited doctoral programmes are the next step in the evolution of universities of applied sciences. They will strengthen applied research and enhance Austria’s international competitiveness,” says FHV Managing Director Stefan Fitz-Rankl.
