Electric commercial vehicles – design, operation, charging infrastructure and energy supply
In light of the global climate crisis and the increasing demand for passenger mobility and goods transport, the decarbonisation of the transport sector must be accelerated. Many bus and logistics companies in the Lake Constance region are willing to invest in the electrification of their fleets; however, they require clear and reliable decision-making support.
Project objective
The project addresses key questions for bus and logistics companies regarding the electrification of their fleets:
-
Which factors affect the energy consumption and battery ageing of electric buses and trucks, and to what extent?
-
Which combinations of routes and vehicle types are most suitable in terms of cost-effectiveness and risk?
-
How does the design of charging infrastructure influence long-term costs?
-
How can base loads, dynamic electricity tariffs, stationary storage systems, and PV installations be integrated into a comprehensive load management strategy?
These questions are examined scientifically through data monitoring and analysis, as well as model-based simulations and optimisations. The project provides open-source tools for designing, simulating, and optimising both the infrastructure and operation of electric fleets for bus and logistics companies.
Detailed information and resources are available on the project website at https://calc.labs.fhv.at/~enable/, which will continue to be updated and expanded until the project concludes on 28 February 2029.
