Grid Development 2030 – Phase II
The growing adoption of solar PV, electric vehicles and heat pumps is significantly changing the demands placed on Vorarlberg’s electricity distribution networks. To ensure that grid investments are planned efficiently and cost-effectively, robust simulation models are essential. As the scientific partner in the Grid Development 2030 – Phase II project, commissioned by Vorarlberger Energienetze GmbH, the FHV Energy Research Centre is further developing these foundations. Building on the results of Phases 0 and I, additional low- and medium-voltage networks are being modelled, scenarios up to 2040 are being developed, and recommendations are being derived for grid expansion, the use of flexibility, and digitalisation.
Project Objectives
- Extend the coupled power flow simulation of low- and medium-voltage distribution networks to additional regions of Vorarlberg.
- Validate the simulation results by comparing them with measurement data from intelligent local substation systems (iONS) and smart meters.
- Develop grid development scenarios for 2030, 2035 and 2040, taking into account electricity demand (electric vehicles and heat pumps), decentralised generation (solar PV), energy storage and flexibility options.
- Identify future grid bottlenecks and evaluate potential grid reinforcement measures – from line upgrades and voltage level adjustments to operational improvements – including short-circuit analyses and indicative cost estimates for the medium-voltage network.
- Derive recommendations for grid expansion strategies and digital planning tools, and develop a high-level concept for a software prototype.
