Reflection on concepts and methods
Hackathons are aimed at software, hardware, and product designers and developers, with the goal of developing new ideas and concepts within multidisciplinary teams that enhance the innovative strength of companies. Based on a specific task, team members discuss solution approaches and concepts, which are then implemented in prototypes. Teams are supported by coaches and experts throughout the process. At the end, the best teams are selected as winners. The course’s objective is to recognize the added value of hackathons and to foster a network of individuals interested in software, hardware, and product development from various disciplines.
- Participation of students from all disciplines is strongly encouraged.
- Voluntary participation in the hackathon is also possible (independent of this course), but without earning ECTS credits.
- Teams formed for the hackathon can consist solely of students enrolled in this course or may include others who are not participating in the course. (Teams with no course participants are also eligible for the ÖH Hackathon.)
Procedure (Winter Semester 2025):
- First Preparation Meeting (mandatory for the course): Presentation of the theme and task for this year's hackathon Team formation and idea development (minimum of 3 members from at least two disciplines) Initial idea discussion
- Second Preparation Session (mandatory for the course): Speed pitches to present teams and project ideas Discussion and refinement of project ideas
- ÖH Hackathon (mandatory for the course): Participation according to the organization of the ÖH Hackathon, including presentations
- Group Expert Discussion (mandatory for the course): Reflection on the steps taken, challenges faced, and lessons learned, based on documentation prepared by the students
Professional and Methodological Competence (F/M):
Students will be able to conceive, design, implement, document, and present a prototype (MVP) in small groups based on an idea (PoC). Additionally, they will critically evaluate and reflect on their collaboration, learning progress, work results, and documentation.
Furthermore, social and communicative skills (S/C) such as teamwork, cooperation, critical thinking, motivation, and reliability are cultivated. Personal skills (S) such as learning ability, motivation, decision-making, responsibility, endurance, perseverance, expressiveness, and presentation are also developed.
Participation in scheduled preparatory activities
Participation in the ÖH Hackathon
Expert discussion
Evaluation of the results (degree of implementation, final presentation (75%)
Expert discussion incl. documentation (25%)
For a positive grade, a minimum of 50% of the possible points must be achieved in each part of the examination.
Currently, students are invited to a variety of hackathons. Credit for this course is examined by the program director in each case.
Depending on their selected topic.
Participation in at least two hackathons with a total duration of at least 48 hours including documentation and reflection of the work process and result.
