FlOw4Heat

Flexible Operation Networks for District Heating

The transformation from traditional, centrally managed district heating networks to intelligent, decentralized systems is characterized by the integration of renewable energy sources and industrial waste heat, lower supply temperatures, and flexible feed-in and distribution. This transformation process comes with challenges regarding the design and optimized operation of heating networks. In the research project FlOw4Heat, simulation and modeling methods are being developed to specifically address these challenges.

Project Goal

To address typical questions with respect to the transformation of heating networks and taking regional conditions into account, FlOw4Heat develops solutions for the simulation, modeling, and optimization of fourth-generation heating networks.

Using data-driven forecasting models for both demand and generation, a dynamic, time-series-based simulation tool is being developed. This tool enables the analysis of specific applications, such as Power-to-Heat, optimized utilization of thermal storages, decentralized feed-in, and model-predictive load control.

In the context of modern heating networks, sector coupling with the electrical distribution grid is achieved based on Power-to-Heat systems. For this purpose, already existing distribution grid simulations are combined with the heating network simulation to assess the overall impacts on the energy system.

As part of this project, the FHV is becoming an R&D partner for regional heating network operators and industrial companies with waste heat potential. By identifying potential heat sources and flexibility options within heating networks, operators are given the opportunity to develop new infrastructure or transform existing systems in line with the goals of modern heating networks – security of supply, increased energy efficiency, and decarbonization.
