What can you expect?

On the occasion of the hundredth edition of the OpenIdea lecture series, the Design Department at FHV invites you to rethink key questions of design: What was, is and will be design? The multitude of ideas from previous years forms the starting point for a critical and inspiring examination of future requirements, developments and potential in design.

The event kicks off with a tour of the exhibition, offering insights into the current exhibition ‘Design Revolution Now!’ at the Designforum and projects from the Design Department. This includes a Water Experience Space, which allows visitors to experience different facets of the element of water with their senses. The exhibits, developed by students of the Master's programme in Design and Creative Leadership, encourage reflection on one's own use of water. Under the title ‘Haiku’, Japanese poems can be experienced audiovisually and interactively. In addition, the history of an archive is brought to life in a new spatial setting. Further stations show how design processes can be developed to work in harmony with the planet.

The discourse programme on the past, present and future of design takes us to the FHV auditorium: How can design be used to address pressing issues of the future? What role do media and technologies play in making complex contexts tangible? And how can design be understood as both a tool for thinking and a tool for action?

We trace OpenIdea back to its first edition, which featured German communication designer Florian Pfeffer as a guest. And we ask him for an update. Back in 2013, Florian published a book entitled: ‘To Do: The New Role of Design in a Changing World’. Using his start-up Ito Ito as an example, he shows how digital technologies can make industrial fashion production more circular.

Swiss artist Regina Hügli explores how systemic connections can be artistically researched and made perceptible. Her work focuses on the element of water, watersheds and bodies of water. With her association ONE BODY OF WATER, she initiates transdisciplinary and participatory projects.

Industrial designer, design theorist and curator Harald Gründl deals with the theory and practice of regenerative design. He is co-founder of the Institute of Design Research Vienna (IDRV), which has been implementing research and education formats since 2008.
