Shaping a sustainable future
(Issue 1 / 2025) The FHV is driving forward the green transformation in business and education: students are developing resource-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for industry in a project co-financed by the EU.
Martin Dobler is head of the project ‘Sustainability teaching case studies for Business & Engineering Education’ (SCABEE) at FHV – Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences. We asked the scientist and lecturer about the goals of this forward-looking project, which focuses on integrating sustainability into university studies.
What is SCABEE and what makes it innovative?
SCABEE is an international project with partners from France, Denmark and Poland, co-financed by the EU. The aim is to anchor sustainability as a core value in business and engineering education. This enables students to drive forward the green transformation in European industries. At the FHV, we are implementing the project on an interdisciplinary basis in cooperation with the Business Informatics Research Centre and the Department of Technology. Wilfried Manhart, FHV programme director of the Master's programme in International Management and Leadership, is responsible for transferring the teaching content.
How is this transferred to university teaching?
Sustainability is not only taught as a theoretical concept, but is actively integrated into practice-oriented education. Our sustainable teaching case studies reflect real ecological challenges that students must deal with in a solution-oriented manner. We promote a systemic understanding of sustainability, and our students develop concrete, resource-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for industry.
What added value does the project offer students?
The focus is on our teaching case studies, which support students in developing sustainable solutions in real-life scenarios. They learn to recognise the interconnectedness of environmental factors and to develop sustainable business strategies. Students acquire skills to actively contribute to the green transformation of industry. For example, through sustainable product development, the integration of circular economy principles and innovative business models such as the servitisation of products.
What impact does SCABEE have on the Vorarlberg region and the economy?
The project strengthens Vorarlberg as a business location by preparing students for the green transformation of industry. It reinforces the fact that FHV is not only an educational institution, but also acts as a catalyst for the economy. Companies increasingly need skilled workers who have a sound understanding of sustainable, resource-efficient practices. SCABEE thus contributes to sustainable economic and social development.
What is the most important outcome of the SCABEE project for students and the region?
The most important outcome is that we provide students not only with theoretical knowledge but also with practical skills that enable them to actively contribute to the green transformation. They develop a deep understanding of sustainable business strategies and learn how to initiate sustainable change in industry. For the Vorarlberg region, the project makes a significant contribution to ensuring long-term competitiveness and sustainability in the economy.
