"Driving forward the energy transition"

10.10.2025
Tobias Wenzel is studying electronics and information technology at the FHV. The 22-year-old from Kaufbeuren talks in an interview about his motivation for this course of study, the dual education system and the high level of practical relevance.

Why did you decide to study Electronics and Information Technology dual study programme?

Tobias Wenzel: I have always been fascinated by Engineering and Technology and renewable energy systems, which is why I chose this course. I am particularly interested in the combination of Energy and control technology with the topic of sustainability. A real highlight for me was programming a control system for a PV system with battery storage as part of my dual studies. In the future, I would like to help drive forward the energy transition.

The course is dual, what exactly does that mean?

Tobias: I work at Rudolf Hörmann GmbH & Co KG in Buchloe in Germany. Work and study alternate from the third semester onwards. I spend about three months at the FHV and then another three months working at the partner company.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the dual study programme?

Tobias: It's actually quite relaxed because there is a clear time difference between studying and working. However, due to the three-month period at the FHV, some examination phases are more stressful than in other degree programmes.

What requirements should you have for this course?

Tobias: Definitely an interest in Computer Science and electrical engineering as well as a high level of motivation and stamina when studying. Especially at the beginning, it's easier if you're good at math or have previous knowledge from a technical college or apprenticeship. But that's not a prerequisite.

What makes this course so special?

Tobias: It's a challenging technical course. We have many lecturers from companies and they bring a lot of practical experience with them. That means it's not too theoretical.

A quick look into the future? What are your plans?

Tobias: I've just started my fifth and penultimate semester. I'll be handing in my bachelor's thesis in summer 2026. After that, I'll be concentrating fully on my work at Rudolf Hörmann GmbH & Co KG again.

And what do you do when you're not working or studying?

Tobias: I mainly enjoy my free time in the mountains. In winter, I like to go skiing. There are great opportunities for this in Vorarlberg.

Thank you for the interview.
