FHV awarded VN Climate Protection Prize

10.12.2025
The joint project with F.M. Hämmerle for unsealing and greening the outdoor areas was awarded a prize in the "School and youth active" category.

"We are delighted to receive this award. We should not only research and teach about this important social issue, but also set an example of how sustainable development can succeed. With projects like these, we make climate protection visible, effective and collaborative - and show that universities can be real role models in implementing sustainable solutions," emphasizes Beate Pawle, Sustainability Officer at the FHV. She accepted the award together with her colleague Heidrun Schöch, who is responsible for construction projects at the FHV, as well as representatives of F.M. Hämmerle Holding, Philipp Hämmerle and Tobias Forer-Pernthaler.

Sustainable campus

A central concern of the FHV is the sustainable design of its campus area. As part of a holistic approach, a master plan was developed for the design of the outdoor space, taking into account both ecological and social aspects. The aim was to create an attractive environment that invites people to linger and at the same time makes an active contribution to climate protection.

Cooperation with F.M. Hämmerle

One project within this master plan was the redesign of the "Sägenplatz" area up to the main FHV building. A particular focus was placed on greening and the creation of shading options. This created climate-resilient recreational spaces that counteract the summer heat and promote biodiversity. An important step was the removal of 20 existing parking spaces, which transformed sealed areas into natural recreational areas. Part of this area is owned by F.M. Hämmerle Holding AG, which actively supported and funded the project - an example of how sustainable development can succeed through cooperation across ownership boundaries.

The redesigned outdoor areas promote biodiversity, improve the microclimate and invite students, lecturers and visitors to linger, learn and meet. A successful example of climate protection in action.
