"I'm in the right profession"
14.01.2026What do you like best about your job?
Johanna Fritz: Every day is different, with challenging situations and making your own decisions. I like working in a team and having direct contact with people. The nice thing about my work is getting positive feedback when talking to patients. That confirms to me that I'm in the right profession.
What motivated you to study Health Care and Nursing back then?
Johanna Fritz: When I had an appendix operation as a child, a cup of tea was brought to my bed in hospital in the middle of the night at my request. I was so happy about this that from that moment on I also wanted to give other people great pleasure with such "little things" and support them. My mother also works in nursing, so I had an insight into this wonderful profession from an early age.
What skills that you developed during your studies do you use in your everyday work?
Johanna Fritz: Open, honest, effective communication and social skills. For example, in conversations and when working with patients, relatives, your own team, trainees, doctors or physiotherapists. Of course, the professional expertise I acquired in the nursing process or in the field of trauma surgery is also very important. I also acquired scientific skills at the FHV, such as working according to the latest scientific standards.
What made studying at the FHV so special?
Johanna Fritz: The high level of practical relevance, for example with the nursing assessment, but also the numerous work placements I completed. I also have very fond memories of the good community in our group and with the lecturers at the FHV.
What distinguishes the FHV as a university?
Johanna Fritz: In addition to the practical training, the internationality was a big plus. We had frequent exchanges with students and other people from all over the world. Another exciting thing about the FHV is the different disciplines that work closely together. Health Care and Nursing with Social Work, for example. This interdisciplinarity was an added value.
Was there a highlight of your studies?
Johanna Fritz: Yes, my internship abroad in Stuttgart in the neuropaediatrics department at the Olga Hospital. I was able to gain a lot of experience of rare diseases and the German healthcare system in a large hospital. There were additional challenges at the time due to the coronavirus pandemic.
What advice would you give to current Health Care and Nursing students?
Johanna Fritz: Learn for yourself, not for others. Get involved in every work placement, even if you're not necessarily interested in the department in particular. I took a lot from each work placement and was able to apply it to the next job.
Thank you for the interview.
