APAT4PATIENTS

Telemedicine in outpatient antibiotic therapy

Healthcare and nursing systems in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are facing significant challenges. An increasing number of people require medical care, while at the same time there is a shortage of healthcare professionals. As a result, outpatient services and digital healthcare solutions are becoming increasingly important.

Telemedicine, in particular, offers new opportunities to support outpatient antibiotic therapy by enabling remote monitoring, improving access to medical expertise, and helping to optimise treatment while reducing the need for in-person visits.

The APAT4PATIENTS project addresses these challenges directly. Its aim is to enable people receiving intravenous antibiotic therapy to be treated safely in their own homes. This approach reduces hospital stays and improves patients’ quality of life.

The project uses modern technologies such as wearable devices and telemedicine to support the safe and straightforward delivery of Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT). Together, project partners from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are developing a new model of care that will be evaluated from medical, technical and data protection perspectives.

Hospitals and healthcare providers also benefit from this approach. Hospital bed capacity can be used more efficiently, unnecessary admissions can be avoided, and healthcare resources can be better allocated.

This model is particularly valuable in rural areas, where access to healthcare services can be more challenging. Patients benefit from reduced travel requirements and greater flexibility, while healthcare systems and medical professionals experience a reduced burden.

The project’s findings will provide valuable insights and recommendations for a modern, sustainable healthcare system across the Alpine Rhine–Bodensee–Hochrhein (ABH) region and beyond.
