The right mix of theory and practice

The part-time studies model allows you to work in parallel with your studies. Even without work experience you can enter this study program. In doing so, you start your professional career at the same time as your studies. Together with the company, we agree on how you can make the best use of both places of learning.

As a part-time student, you will not have any courses during the day from Monday to Thursday in the first three semesters. Instead, you will be at the FHV all day on Friday and Saturday. In the fourth and fifth semester you choose your individual specialisation. Your choice defines your schedule, courses can then also take place during the week. A good coordination with the company increases your choices.

In the final semester, the joint courses take place primarily on Mondays. For this purpose, Fridays are again available for you. You can always take advantage of offers for full-time students (e.g. revision courses) and attend courses with the same learning objectives.

Your advantages:

  • Well-founded basic studies with many individual options
  • Practical experience through professional practical training in renowned companies
  • Modern campus, top equipment 24/7 access to technical laboratories
  • Small groups: high practical relevance, personal supervision, lively exchange
  • Clear time frame, clear structure
  • Semester abroad possible worldwide or work with international students
  • Double-degree possible

Specialisations

You choose 3 out of these 6 specialisations already before starting your studies. After consultation with the programme director, you can choose a specialisation from the master studies Informatics or Sustainable Energy Systems. By doing so, you determine the majority of the subjects in your degree program. The research centres of the FHV offer courses in individual specialisations

Learning content in detail

Study and career: yes, it's possible!

The master's degree program is designed as a full-time study program and means a lot of work and a high degree of independence for you. During the four semesters, you will work in a very project-oriented way. Scheduled educational components from Tuesday to Friday all day as well as fixed attendance days in block weeks allow you a small amount of professional activity alongside your studies. Calculated over the whole year, you can work a maximum of 20 hours per week. A certain flexibility in terms of time is necessary, as in exceptional cases educational components can be scheduled on Mondays and Saturdays. Depending on the electives chosen, contact hours may also take place on other half-days of the week.

A professional activity to study is especially realistic if the Master Mechatronics is also in the interest of the employer. This gives you the chance to work on topics that are important to the company during your studies.

Thinking ahead with Contextual Studies

The Contextual Studies at the FHV is a flexible part of your master's degree programme and a special feature among Austria's universities of applied sciences. It allows you to pursue personal questions of interest, to work independently and explore new territory: in research, in other cultures or disciplines.

Master's degree programmes at our university of applied sciences are characterised by three elements:

1. Core Studies:
The compulsory fundamental subjects in core studies establish the specialist skills and support your professional competences.

2. Specialisation Studies:
In the chosen field of specialisation, you will enhance and specialise - depending on the degree programme - your professional access based on your interests and career goals.

3. Contextual Studies:
In a selection of more than 40 courses, you cross the boundaries between:

  •  disciplines and schools of thought (interdisciplinarity)
  •  cultures, languages and countries (internationality)
  •  current knowledge and the future (research and development)

Your degree programme takes you through all three basic elements. This process allows you to deepen and broaden your skills while letting you incorporate your personal interests in your programme of study.
