Interview
Since 2020, the FHV has been part of the European university network RUN-EU (Regional University Network – European University). What does RUN-EU mean to you?
Nicolas Schmidle: Meeting new people abroad and growing both professionally and personally in the process. I’ve experienced places off the beaten track and gained new perspectives. RUN-EU short stays are also recognised as international learning experiences and appear in the Diploma Supplement.
You are actively involved in the RUN-EU network yourself. What roles do you hold there?
Nicolas Schmidle: I am the Chairperson of the RUN-EU Student Council at the FHV and the main student contact for this matter. I particularly value the exchange with the FHV team and the chairpersons of the partner universities, as well as participating in RUN-EU initiatives. In doing so, I am committed to keeping students informed, giving voice to their perspectives and actively working together to further develop the framework conditions at the FHV.
From the perspective of RUN-EU – how do you look back on the last two years of your Master’s degree in Business Informatics – Digital Transformation?
Nicolas Schmidle: Very positive. I’m particularly pleased that mobility programmes are now better funded and more accessible to students. International experiences shouldn’t be held back by a lack of funds. Overall, the range of opportunities has become more visible and diverse. For me, what stands out most is just how valuable international cooperation is, and how much I’ve grown personally through engaging with other cultures.
The RUN-EU programme enables short-term stays abroad, even for working students. How important do you think this is for students?
Nicolas Schmidle: Nicolas Schmidle: Extremely important. Especially when you’re young, it’s invaluable to get to know new cultures and be open to new experiences. It helps you grow both professionally and personally. RUN-EU short-term mobility schemes offer an opportunity particularly to those for whom a semester abroad isn’t feasible, either financially or logistically, due to work or family commitments. Thanks to the generous financial support, this programme makes international experiences accessible to many more students.
Was there a particular highlight for you during the RUN-EU programme?
Nicolas Schmidle: I find it hard to pick just one highlight; every country and every university was special in its own way. I’ll always remember an autumn afternoon in Bruges when, after a lecture during a short visit, we strolled through the old town and ended up in a little bar. You never forget moments like that. The barbecue at the FHV, which I organised with my friend and Vice-Chair Florian Tagwerker for around 100 people, was also a real highlight. And Student Week 2024 at the FHV, where we were able to show international students our home region – for example, on the hike up the Hoher Fraßen – was something very special.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Nicolas Schmidle: All I can say is: be brave and just get involved. RUN-EU offers a wealth of opportunities where you can gain an incredible amount, both professionally and personally, as well as gaining international experience. You don’t always have to commit to a whole semester abroad straight away; often, just taking that first small step is enough. Anyone who is open-minded and gets involved will definitely be rewarded for it. And for those who want to get even more involved: we’re always happy to welcome new members to the RUN-EU Student Council at the FHV. There are currently two vacancies for Vice-Chairperson – why not apply? For more information and to apply for the role of Vice-Chairperson, please contact: oeh-run-eu@fhv.at
