Why mechatronics is the key
12.01.2026Design expertise without knowledge of electrification and automation? "That doesn't make sense," Fynn Kunath realized as soon as he gained his first insight into the professional environment of a design engineer. He therefore decided to complete a Master's degree in Mechatronics at the FHV to gain a deeper insight into the software and hardware used to control various motors. The North German chose Dornbirn. "I was there for the information evening. The landscape in Vorarlberg and the university immediately appealed to me," the 25-year-old recalls.
From embedded systems to microtechnology
Fynn appreciates the high degree of flexibility with regard to the content of studies with different specialization modules. "Depending on your interests, mechanics, embedded systems or microtechnology are possible modules," says the native of Dornbirn. He appreciates the excellent equipment in the laboratories and the 24/7 access, the small group size of the study programs and the personal exchange with the lecturers. The examinations consist of smaller interim examinations or submissions. "This means I am actively involved with the material throughout the semester instead of having to take a large, traditional examination lasting several hours at the end of the semester," says Fynn.
Fantastic view
When asked about a highlight of his studies, he spontaneously says: "Every time I look outside in almost every lecture hall or classroom. The fantastic view always reminds me how beautiful it is here in Vorarlberg," emphasizes Fynn, who is also a Student Ambassador for the FHV. He is also enthusiastic about the practical nature of the course. "In a project work in embedded systems, the conveyor belts of all groups were ultimately connected in a network and communicated with each other without errors so that parcels could be sent in a circle. Seeing the result of the many hours of programming in action was a very good feeling," emphasizes Fynn.
Interest in interrelationships
Students interested in the Master's degree in Mechatronics should have previous knowledge of electrical engineering, control engineering and Computer Science. "It's an advantage if you've already held and operated a microcontroller in your hand," says the Master's student. What drives him personally is curiosity and the question of how the things around us actually work. Almost every technical device today contains a chip and electrical peripherals. However, the underlying connections are not always easy to penetrate. "Without a genuine interest, it's difficult to understand the complex workings," he emphasizes. In order to get as much out of his studies as possible, he therefore also experiments in his free time and makes use of the free access to the laboratories.
Part-time job possible
Alongside his studies, he works 30% at Servus Intralogistics GmbH in Dornbirn in the standardization and modular system department. "The part-time job allows me to study almost independently of my parents, which I really appreciate." He also makes time for his hobbies. Thanks to the discounts offered by his ÖH membership, he regularly swims at the Dornbirn municipal pool or the Enz forest pool or climbs in the bouldering hall in Dornbirn. He also enjoys hiking in the mountains around Dornbirn. "I've already explored a lot, from relaxed hiking trails to alpine tours and via ferratas. In summer, I went on a multi-day hut tour with fellow students, where we were able to get to know Vorarlberg from a completely new perspective," he enthuses. Skiing in winter is also a must: On the slopes with his fellow students in the morning and at his desk together in the afternoon. "There are many reasons to stay in Vorarlberg after graduation," concludes Fynn.
