Fathers on parental leave
06.06.2025"Kathi is in the middle of her training to become a general practitioner," says David Schönebeck. While she is currently working in Innsbruck and will soon be moving to Bludenz, David looks after their eleven-month-old daughter. "It was clear that we would split it up - so that she could actually complete her training and then work as a doctor." Born in Germany, David worked as a doctoral student at the microtechnology research center until he went on maternity leave. His topic: acoustic surface waves and acoustic black holes. He is also writing his doctoral thesis during his six-month maternity leave. In any case, he plans to spend a lot of time with his daughter in nature. He and his wife met in the German mountain rescue service. Both are passionate about mountain sports and want to pass on their passion to the next generation.
Uncomplicated application process
Applying for parental leave at the FHV was straightforward. "A conversation with the manager, a form for social insurance - and it was done. The decision felt right. Especially because you never know what will happen with your first child. Children have a mind of their own," says David and would also like to encourage other (expectant) dads to take the plunge and put aside traditional role models. "This is a time when both Kathi and I can grow." With this in mind, we wish all families a happy Father's Day on Sunday!
