This course shall equip students with a basic knowledge of the Austrian state, its constitution and administration as well as its jurisdiction. Access to law shall be made easier for students. Therefore different shelters are presented and thus the contacts and search possibilities for students facilitated. The basic ideas of jurisprudence (hierarchical structure of the legal order, public and private law, laws and regulations), the principles of criminal law and social protection are addressed. This course shall equip students with a basic knowledge of the nature and the concept of the Austrian administration and the Austrian structure of authorities (federal-, provincial- and self-administration). The procedure, the principles and the completion of administrative proceedings are ventilated. In addition the specifics and the procedure of the administrative criminal proceedings are discussed. By an insight during the lecture into certain administrative laws, which are of importance to social workers, handling with the administration is to be practiced.
Students should be taught the structure of the state, the foundations of its actions and the position of the individual in the state and society. After attending the course, they should know the principles of law, the state and its constitution and administration. They should know what subjects are dealt with in which laws and other regulations and what information they can get from which authorities. They should learn that their social work activities are law-oriented. They will learn how laws come about and how and on what basis courts and authorities work and make decisions. They will gain insight into the basic principles of criminal law. Students will learn about the structure of the administrative apparatus as well as how it operates and how it protects rights. Through discussions of selected material laws from the field of social work, students should be able to recognize the connections between administration and society after attending this course. During an excursion to the Regional Court of Feldkirch, students will gain insight into the course of court proceedings.
