Course content

Students are enabled to practice the planning of a scientific thesis using the practical example of their own master's thesis and to reflect with both peers and experienced lecturers. In particular, students are provided with the opportunity to gain greater clarity about their own work and to take up valuable suggestions.

  • Presentation of context and motivation
  • Requirements for a research question
  • Research of the current state of literature
  • Selection of appropriate research methods
  • Creating a seminar paper
  • Preparation of a schedule for the execution of the master thesis
Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the students developed a question for their Master's thesis and embedded it in the state of the art through literature research. The students

  • can research scientific literature in a limited field and check its relevance.
  • can prepare this literature in the form of a coherent text.
  • are able to identify existing gaps in knowledge / research needs in a limited task area.
  • can develop a topic for their master thesis and the associated research question on the basis of their own interests, the research interests of cooperation partners (e.g. companies or research centres) and the identified gaps in knowledge.
  • are able to present and defend their research question to others.
  • are able to identify suitable research methods to answer the research question.
  • are able to plan the scientific research work and can set up a schedule for the execution of their master thesis.
