Course content

In the framework of this course each student works on an actual problem in the field of intelligent building technology. The individual and specific tasks are derived, for example, from a

  • research article
  • problem of an industrial or commercial partner of the FH Vorarlberg
  • research topic from a research centre at FH Vorarlberg - in particular FZ Energie

The course will lead students to an understanding of a particular energy problem in the field of "intelligent buildings". The main focus is on the use of learned methods of analysis and modelling of thermal systems.  The following implementations could be typical project examples

  • Model-based control concepts for HVAC systems in buildings
  • Model-based control of thermal storage and/or electric battery storage (e.g. electric vehicles)
  • Measurement data-based control approaches for energy applications in buildings

Project results can serve as preparation for the Master's thesis.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students are familiar to the process of transferring existing research approaches to specific problems, analysing the results and analysing them critically. The students can

  • place the problem under consideration in the context of intelligent buildings and reproduce it argumentatively
  • understand limitations and assumptions of the problem under consideration and can identify them
  • independently develop the chosen existing approach (from the literature) and apply it to a clearly defined problem.
  • systematically prepare in writing the approaches used and the results achieved in their own project work.
  • compare their own results with existing ones, differentiate and criticise them with regard to the assumptions and methods made
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
  • Brief parts of the lecture (presentation of possible topics)
  • Coaching of the project work in small groups (1-3 students)
  • Discussion and free teaching conversations
  • Presentations with feedback
