Course content

In this course, the students are introduced to central creative ways of thinking and acting, and familiarized with the basic principles and strategies of typography and interaction design.
In this course, students will gain an understanding of the properties of fonts, their context and the way in which typography helps the reader read and navigate a text.

  • Classification systems, typographical terminology, principles of spacing, the use of typographical contrasts in composition, legibility, hierarchy and typographical form as a tool for expression and communication.
  • Creation of flexible design systems that allow an idea to be expressed in different media.
  • Basic knowledge of interaction design.

The focus is on organizing, analyzing and reflecting.

The course contains asynchronous teaching elements and is based on the "flipped classroom" concept.
Contents provided as online tutorials, including exercise examples, are used by the students as preparation for the course and / or for exercise purposes.

Learning outcomes
  • The students have a basic understanding of creative ways of thinking and acting.
  • They have a basic knowledge of typography and grid systems
  • The students acquire an understanding of the properties of fonts, their context and the way in which typography supports reading and navigation of a text and they know how typography influences legibility.
  • The students know classification systems, typographical terminology, the principles of spacing and know how to use typographical contrasts in composition.
  • They develop a sensitivity for shape and color, proportion and space.
  • They will be able to recognize the challenges of dynamic content in print and the web.
  • They have basic knowledge of interaction design.
  • The students have an understanding of how design problems can be meaningfully addressed in the context of current design practices and technological framework conditions.
  • They can use the imparted tools for analysis and reflection in the context of design practice.
  • They are able to use design vocabulary to reflect on your own work and those of others and to discuss it critically.

The analysis (reading and writing) will take place as part of the “Scientific Work” course.
